Right to Privacy vs. Nothing to Hide

“If you read someone else’s diary, you get what you deserve.”
― David Sedaris

Tired of all those stories about broken encryption and NSA snooping? Who cares, right?

Well, I do. Why are we even debating the right to privacy in this country? Yes, it’s not in the Bill of Rights, but how about your State Constitution? Many states have privacy laws. I know mine does. Of course, where there are no explicit laws, we could try relying on personal standards and common courtesy. There’s a thought.

Or maybe you don’t care. Maybe you’re one of those bold people who have “nothing to hide.”

If you are one of those righteous few, let us know. Write a comment to this post and include your social security number, date of birth, mother’s maiden name. While you’re at it, tell us how your prostate is doing. or about your last pap smear, or whether you need a Viagra refill.

When you consider all the possible information you are potentiially sharing with people who have no business knowing it, then you might finally get it:

Most of us have nothing to hide, but lots to keep private.

Get the difference?
